Fluorine Chemical Products

PVDF Coating Grade

PVDF fusible fluorocarbon resin for coatings made by homopolymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) with a purity of ≥99.99%. It is a polyvinylidene fluoride copolymer with a low melt viscosity grade, especially suitable for coatings and cable industries. The  fluorocarbon paint made of PVDF resin is sprayed or baked by roller coating, and the paint has unparalleled  super weather resistance, temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and processing performance.HAJ601 is mainly used as resin for fluorine coatings, used  in fluorocarbon spraying of single aluminum plates and aluminum profiles.

PVDF Production Process

Our PVDF resin is made through the emulsion polymerization system, which primarily consists of four basic components: monomer, emulsifier, initiator, and water. The reaction conditions are as follows: polymerization temperature of 75–90°C, polymerization pressure of 2.0–3.8 MPa, polymerization time of 14 hours, and a product yield of ≥90%. The emulsion polymerization of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) is not a true emulsion polymerization in the strict sense but should be classified as solution precipitation polymerization. It involves three specific steps:

  • Mass Transfer Process: The VDF (vinylidene fluoride) monomer dissolves in the aqueous phase.
  • Dilute Aqueous Solution Polymerization: Polymerization occurs in the dilute aqueous solution.
  • Precipitation of Polymer Particles: The polymer product particles are insoluble in water and precipitate out of the aqueous phase. Under the action of the emulsifier, a stable emulsion is formed.

Precautions for Use

① PVDF should not be processed and used at temperatures higher than 350℃ to prevent the decomposition of toxic gas. Care should be taken to prevent inhalation of dust during use.

② PVDF has good flame retardant and smoke suppression properties, but when exposed to an open flame, it will release toxic hydrogen fluoride gas and fluorocarbon organic compounds. Operators should take personal protection when using and processing.

Transportaion

According to the non-dangerous goods transportation, the transportation process should avoid being subjected to the heat, moisture or the violent vibration.

Storage

Polyvinylidene fluoride resin should be stored in a cool, dry and ventilated place. Avoid direct sunlight, and should beisolated from fire sources and away from heat sources.

FAQ

Our PVDF resin is mainly used as a resin for fluorine coating.

The function of PVDF resin in fluorocarbon coatings lies in its alternating arrangement of fluorinated and non-fluorinated groups and its powerful C-F bonds. This structure provides stable and robust bonding, distinguishing the physical properties of fluorocarbon coatings from conventional coatings. In addition to excellent wear resistance and impact resistance, particularly in harsh climates and environments, PVDF resin contributes to long-term color retention and UV resistance due to its inherent stability and durability.

PVDF resin is typically dissolved in a solvent to form a liquid coating solution. This solution is then applied using spray or roller application methods onto substrates like metals (aluminum, steel) for architectural and industrial applications.

PVDF fluorocarbon coatings are suitable for a variety of surfaces including aluminum panels, steel structures, concrete, and other metals used in architectural facades, cladding, roofing, and industrial equipment.

PVDF liquid coating typically refers to PVDF resin dissolved in solvents to form a liquid coating, which is applied to the surface of substrates through spraying or roller coating. Subsequently, these coatings undergo baking where solvents and curing agents evaporate, forming a continuous PVDF film.

In contrast, PVDF powder coating involves PVDF resin being made into powder, applied to the substrate surface via electrostatic spraying or fluidized bed dipping. The powder is then melted and cured at high temperatures to form a coating.

Advantages and Applications of Liquid PVDF Fluorocarbon Coatings

Traditional liquid PVDF fluorocarbon coatings remain mainstream with mature production processes and well-established application techniques, widely recognized in numerous architectural applications.

Challenges and Limitations of Powder PVDF Fluorocarbon Coatings

Powder PVDF fluorocarbon coatings offer advantages such as environmental friendliness, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, aligning with current trends towards energy conservation and environmental protection. However, they have yet to dominate the domestic and international markets due to following reasons:

  • Challenges in Production: The production of PVDF powder involves low-temperature cryogenic grinding, significant equipment investment, and typically requires solvent participation, making solvent recovery challenging and limiting environmental benefits.
  • Differences in Application Adaptability: Powder coatings exhibit poorer adhesion on imperfect substrates compared to liquid coatings, often requiring complementary PVDF primers to enhance adhesion. In contrast, liquid coatings can better accommodate uneven substrate surfaces, reducing the risk of coating detachment.
  • Cost and Powder Recovery Issues: When applied at traditional thicknesses, powder coatings consume larger amounts of material, lacking cost advantages. Additionally, difficulties in recovering ultrafine powders require equipment modifications, posing challenges for acceptance among some customers.
