Why Is HFO 1234yf Refrigerant Significant?

HFO 1234yf refrigerant has gained considerable attention in the automotive and refrigeration industries due to its environmental benefits. This article explores the significance of HFO 1234yf, highlighting its advantages over traditional refrigerants and its role in supporting global environmental goals.

Background on Refrigerants

Refrigerants have evolved through four generations of products:

  • The first generation of refrigerants caused the most damage to the ozone layer and has been phased out globally.
  • The second generation caused less damage to the ozone layer and has been phased out in Europe and the United States, but is still widely used in China, where it is currently being phased out.
  • The third generation does not harm the ozone layer but has a strong global warming effect. It is widely used abroad and is in the early stages of being phased out.
  • The fourth generation mainly refers to HFO refrigerants, with representative products including R1234ze and R1234yf. These refrigerants are noted for their excellent performance and environmental friendliness, receiving widespread attention and successful application.

What is HFO 1234yf Refrigerant?

2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene, also known as HFO-1234yf, with the chemical formula CH2=CFCF3, will replace R-134a as the refrigerant used in automotive air conditioning systems.

It is a new type of refrigerant that poses almost no harm to the environment. Its global warming potential (GWP) is only 1/335 of that of R-134a, and its atmospheric lifetime is 1/400. HFO-1234yf has a GWP of only 4 and can easily replace R-134a.

Automakers can adopt HFO-1234yf without significantly modifying assembly lines or automotive air conditioning systems. Among all possible R-134a alternatives, it has the lowest conversion cost, although its initial cost is considerably higher than that of R-134a. Handling HFO-1234yf in auto repair shops is similar to handling R-134a, except that new equipment is required.

Why Is HFO 1234yf Refrigerant Significant?

1. Environmental Significance

The primary environmental advantage of HFO 1234yf is its low GWP, which contributes to reduced greenhouse gas emissions from air conditioning systems. This aligns with international regulations such as the Kigali Amendment and the EU F-Gas Regulation, which aim to phase down high-GWP refrigerants. The adoption of HFO 1234yf has already contributed to significant reductions in global warming impacts equivalent to retiring millions of older vehicles.

The R1234yf refrigerant has almost no impact on the environment. It breaks down into harmless substances and disappears from the atmosphere within 11 days. Compared to the currently used R134a refrigerant, which remains in the atmospheric environment for up to 13 years, R1234yf has a significant advantage.

2. Performance Characteristics

HFO 1234yf demonstrates significant advantages in terms of fuel consumption and emissions for vehicles. It offers thermodynamic performance comparable to R-134a, maintaining similar energy efficiency and cooling capacity. One of the key benefits of HFO 1234yf is its higher vapor density, which allows for the use of smaller compressors. This feature can potentially reduce energy consumption, contributing to overall efficiency improvements.

Vehicles using R1234yf refrigerant consume less fuel and have emissions that are 20% to 30% lower than those using CO2 refrigerants. This reduction in emissions further decreases carbon footprint, making HFO 1234yf a more environmentally friendly choice for automotive air conditioning systems.

3. Industry Adoption

According to the EU regulations on controlling fluorinated greenhouse gases, from January 1, 2017, the EU banned the use of refrigerants with a GWP value greater than 150 in newly manufactured car air conditioning systems. Since the previously most commonly used HFC-134a has a GWP value of 1300, it was prohibited. Consequently, the use of low-GWP refrigerants in car air conditioning systems became a trend and necessity, with CO2, hydrocarbons, HFC-152a, and some mixtures that can be used as automotive air conditioning refrigerants becoming research hotspots.

The new refrigerant HFO-1234yf meets the requirements of the new EU regulations. Developing compressors that use carbon dioxide as a refrigerant material is relatively challenging because current production lines for R134a refrigerant compressors cannot produce carbon dioxide compressors. Completely replacing existing production equipment would impose significant economic pressure on companies.

Global automotive air conditioning compressor manufacturers prefer to use HFO-1234yf as an alternative to traditional refrigerants because developing compressors with this working fluid is technically less challenging than with carbon dioxide. It allows for good utilization of existing compressor technology and manufacturing equipment, thus protecting existing resources.

4. Challenges and Controversies

As a replacement for HFC-134a, the refrigerant HFO-1234yf may raise concerns among many people regarding its safety and flammability.

Although the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) considers HFO-1234yf to be mildly flammable, years of testing by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) have shown that it will not ignite under the conditions present in automotive air conditioning systems. Evaluations by other independent third-party organizations also conclude that using HFO-1234yf in vehicles is as safe as using R-134a.

5. Economic Impact

Using HFO1234yf refrigerant offers significant economic advantages.

Low Usage Cost

Firstly, its usage cost is low because HFO1234yf can be easily integrated into existing automotive air conditioning systems. In most cases, only minor design adjustments are needed, or none at all, meaning that after switching to HFO1234yf, the hardware cost of the air conditioning system remains largely unchanged.

Low Installation Cost

Additionally, the installation cost of HFO1234yf is also low. Due to its properties, HFO1234yf can generally be used directly with current system materials without requiring extensive modifications to existing equipment. This compatibility significantly reduces conversion costs, enabling automakers to achieve environmental goals with lower investment.

Provides a Global Unified Solution

Globally, HFO1234yf offers a unified solution. Its performance characteristics allow it to meet current and future global standards effectively, giving automakers a supply chain advantage through a single global solution. In some regions, if automakers switch to using HFO1234yf refrigerant before government regulations on refrigerant use are enacted, the environmental contributions of these vehicles can be credited towards overall vehicle emissions, helping manufacturers meet stricter future fuel economy standards.

Future Outlook

Although most manufacturers worldwide use R-1234yf in light vehicles, the transition to commercial/off-road vehicles in other regions has not yet become widespread. However, the recent SNAP decision combined with the AIM Act in the United States positions R-1234yf as the preferred R-134a replacement for global manufacturers.

This means that HFO1234yf will not only be widely used in light vehicles but will also gradually enter the medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicle market in the future. This shift is primarily driven by environmental policies, as HFO1234yf has a much lower GWP than traditional R-134a.

Despite the significant environmental advantages of HFO1234yf, its higher cost remains a major barrier to widespread adoption, particularly in cost-sensitive markets. However, as production capacity expands and technology advances, these challenges are expected to be alleviated. With increasing global environmental protection requirements and the automotive industry’s commitment to sustainable development, HFO1234yf is expected to continue playing an important role in the future.
